Low Carb Milk

I did a double take in the supermarket when I noticed Hood low Carb milk right next to the regular milk. And not just regular either – they had chocolate! If you are a milk lover, you know what I mean – that craving for a glass of milk has been a low carb diet buster for me many times.

But I wondered, does it taste any good?

I tentatively reached out for low carb milk – but wait – which kind should I get? There were a couple of versions in different colored containers. What if I didn’t like it? It didn’t come in anything smaller than a half gallon, so I sprang for the chocolate which I figured I could choke my way through easier than regular milk flavor.

I got it home and ripped open the container – just a little taste at first – it was yummy! Creamy, almost like a milk shake and very low in carbs with only 2g net carbs per cup. I couldn’t get over how good it tasted – even better the colder it was. In fact, I think you could get the taste of a milk shake if you threw some in the blender with ice cubes.

I also tried the 2% reduced fat regular milk flavor (Hood calls these dairy products by the way) and it was yummy too. Not too much like regular milk but more of a vanilla taste like a vanilla milk shake but not as thick. I haven’t tried the low fat, but I heard it was icky so stick with the 2 percent in the blue container and avoid the green.

These new products by Hood are Atkins approved and labeled as Carb Countdown Dairy Beverages. It’s got 2 or 3 grams of carbs depending on the “flavor” (the chocolate milk has 1 g fiber for a net carb count of 2) along with 50% more protein, more calcium and less calories than milk. Hood is able to reduce the carbs by reducing the sugars and sweetening the drink with Splenda. You can use it in place of milk in most recipes - even for baking!
