Tips For Low Carb Cooking
If you are committed to the low carb way of eating, but also craving some of your old favorite foods you may still be able to satisfy those cravings with a little bit of substitution. Many of the foods that used to be your favorites, have a low carb choice that you can use - the flavor might be a little bit different but it won't take long for you to get used to the new flavor and on your way to well chosen and sounder eating!
Here’s some hints for you to use which will make your low carb cooking a breeze:
1. Make your own low carb bread crumbs for breaded foods like chicken Parmesan and stuffed peppers. You may be able to purchase low carb bread crumbs, but you can likewise produce them by toasting low carb bread.Simply place the low carb bread in the oven on a cookie sheet and bake on a low temperature. When it is toasted, use a food processor or blender to mash it into crumbs.
2. Use soy flour or bake mix. When you need to use flour for cooking or putting on breaded foods, substitute soy flour or
Atkins Bake Mix
. You can change over your favorite recipes that use white flour by substituting these.
3. Use
low carb chocolate bars
for baking cookies and muffins. Now that you’ve converted your favored chocolate chip cookie recipe to use Atkins bake mix, you wont want to use those high carb chocolate chips! Cut up a low carb chocolate bar into chip sized pieces and use those instead of the chips.
4. Use
Splenda
instead of sugar. Recipes that call forsugar can be changed to use Splenda. Splenda is lighter and a slightly different texture and volume than sugar so you will have to play around with it and it may not work for all recipes but it works well on most subsitutions.
5. Make great fruit smoothies with low carb yogurt. Ok, well it’s not actually cooking, but if you love creamy smoothies you can enjoy them again by using low carb yogurt and fruit. Just make sure you use fruit that is low in carbs. Using the whole fruit and notjust the juice will retain the fiber and help to lower the net carb count. Adding a dash of vanilla or flavored syrup will give you a bit of a flavor boost.
6. If you are craving low carb pasta but can't stand the taste of the new products, try using spaghetti squash. It tastes a lot better than the packaged low carb pasta and only has about 7 grams carbs per 1 cupserving. We have a recipe for cooking it here
