Maltitol is a sugar alcohol that is used for a sweetener in sugar free candy, cookies and gum. It has no aftertaste and since conversion of it requires little insulin, it does not increase serum glucose levels making it perfect for low carb diets.

In addition to keeping blood sugar levels level, Maltitol has other benefits. It is lower in calories than sugar and With only 2.1 calories per gram and does not promote tooth decay. Many studies have been done and the Joint Food and Agriculture Organization/World Health Organization Expert Committee on Food Additives has concluded that it is safe.

There is one drawback, however, due to the body’s slow absorption, it can have a laxative effect if over consumed.

Young children and people with metabolic disorders should be very careful about consumtion. A warning statement has been recommended for consumption greater than 100 grams per day. Of course everyone is different so you would need to experiment to see what level is comfortable for your body.
